Romania may not be the first country that comes to one’s mind when thinking about wine. However, the country has a millennial wine history, going back to the Romanians’ ancestors, the Dacians and the Romans. Occupying the same latitudes as France’s main wine regions, Romania has great soil and climate conditions for grape growing. Situated on the same latitude as Bordeaux, the climate is drier and more continental, as the Black Sea does not have the same influence over Romania as the Atlantic Ocean does in Bordeaux. Romanian autumns are long and gentle, allowing grapes to ripen slowly and concentrate good flavors.
Holding the sixth place in Europe for wine production, and has one of the oldest wine making traditions in the world, its viticulture dating back more than 6,000 years. Viticulture became a current activity of the local inhabitants mainly in the hilly areas. Numerous local wine grape varieties have been obtained during medieval time by empirical selection, becoming representatives for Romanian wine regions. Up to the phylloxera crisis, each Romanian wine region has its own wine grape assortment, that generates specific local wines. Since the medieval period, wine has been the traditional alcoholic beverage of the Romanians.
